English club & church

We found an English club that takes place every Friday. It starts in the evenings and it is an hour and couple minutes walk. We been walking around Canakkale around 10 miles per day. But it is worth it. We walk around meeting with connections we have develop. Canakkale has been a great city for evangelizing. We have met several earthquake victims and been able to minister. But many times first you have to be friends with the person before evangelizing.

I was surprised by the English club, more than 30 people show up. When people find out we are from America, they are shock and want to know the reason we are in Turkey. When we tell them that we are volunteers and helping churches (we can’t say the word missionary in muslim countries), they are shocked and ask where is the church?

We had been able to share the gospel with people in the English club. Also we have prayed for several people and then others have asked for prayers too. We also had a bible study with one young guy from the English club who is really interested in learning more about Jesus. He also came to church with us and he brought friends and one of his friends gave his life to Christ. Next week they came again and the young guy was asking me about baptism and how to pray and different good questions. We have been able to disciple him and answer his questions.

I also had another friend who attended the church and brought his friend (who thinks happiness is in a place, but we told her it is in Jesus), I met this person in a coffee shop and explain to him that we are save by grace and faith in Jesus and not by works. This friend keeps encountering believers, the Lord is calling him.

Also one lady that was in the English club is a believer. She was invited by a guy who always comes to the English club, but she has been struggling with her faith and my teammates and I were able to encourage her. It is amazing and beautiful how God is working.

Ramadan

Also we are in Turkey during the Ramadan fasting. Many muslims fast but others don’t. But one thing that surprised us is that there is a drummer boy going around 4am banging the drums and waking people up. The reason for this is so they can eat before the sun comes up. But I realized many of these people do their fasting due to a tradition rather than by heart. So we been praying for Jesus to reveal himself to them. The fasting has helped us to develop conversations.

Neighbors

Also our neighbors who know we are Jesus followers invited us to Ramadan dinner after the sun down. It was a delicious amazing meal and we had a nice time with them. They asked us many questions about Jesus and we were able to answer them. Also, one time they sent us dinner after several of us came from working in Ayvacik. Another time my teammate brought the bible and the neighbors were reading it.

Imam and student

Another time, my teammate Elijah and I met an Imam (teacher of Islam) and his student. We enter a deep long conversation with them. We cited verses of the bible and verses of the quran. There is a verse in quran 5:68 that tells muslims that they have to stand and observe the Torah and Gospels and Quran. This verse has been shocking to many muslims we have encountered and the reason is because they don’t read. But in this conversation the student was so respectful that he invited us to dinner the next day and we gave him a Turkish bible.

Prayer

There has been times that when I pray for people the Lord moves in a powerful way. One time I prayed for a lady and she said she felt something she never felt and peace and she lifted her sleeve to show me she got goosebumps. And I told her that is the presence of Jesus. She can’t understand why would God send Jesus to die for her and why does He love her. But the Lord is moving. Also praying for others they have felt something during the prayer. Also from April 17-18 my team pray for the muslims in the night of power from 8pm-5am.

Ayvacik

We went to Ayvacik to work on the new church couple times. While a team of girls are painting, our team of guys is doing heavy lifting. We been working the eight hours there every time we go. But it has been nice to do manual labor for glory and honor of God. We have enjoyed it and even though its tiring. There are not a lot of churches, so glory to God we are helping one that is being built.

ATL (Ask the Lord)

Our time finished in Canakkale, which was sad because we made so many connections. But exciting because we were able to go to the Izmir for couple of days to visit several churches mention in Revelations. Then back to Istanbul where we will have a debrief and change teams. We will be heading into Jordan on the 23rd with new teams.

Seven churches/cities

We went to the city of:

• Pergamum (Revelation 2:12)
• Smyrna (Revelation2:8)
• Efesus (Revelation 2:1 & Ephesians)
• Laodicea (Revelation 3:14)
• Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7)
• Sardis (Revelation 3:1)
• Thyatira (Revelation 2:18)

Each city/church we went we read the letter from Revelations out loud. It was a powerful beautiful experience. Also, we where able to share the gospel with tourist in those ancient sites or muslims that live in those cities. What an honor God gave us. One person gave their life to Jesus.

Junta de ingles & iglesia

Encontramos una reunion de inglés que es todos los viernes. Comienza en la noche y caminamos una hora y un par de minutos. Hemos estado caminando 10 millas por dia en Canakkale. Pero vale la pena. Muchas veces nos reunimos con las conexiones que hemos desarrollado. Canakkale ha sido una gran ciudad para evangelizar. Hemos ministrado a varias víctimas del terremoto. Pero muchas veces primero tienes que ser amigo de la persona antes de evangelizarlos.

Me sorprendió la junta de inglés, se presentaron más de 30 personas. Cuando la gente se da cuenta que somos de Estados Unidos, se sorprenden y quieren saber la razón por la que estamos en Turquía. Cuando les decimos que somos voluntarios y ayudamos a las iglesias (no podemos decir la palabra misionero en los países musulmanes), se sorprenden y preguntan, dónde está la iglesia?

Hemos podido compartir el evangelio con la gente del club de inglés. También hemos orado por varias personas y luego otros también han pedido oraciones. También tuvimos un estudio bíblico con un joven del club de inglés que está realmente interesado en aprender más acerca de Jesús. También vino a la iglesia con nosotros y trajo amigos y uno de sus amigos entregó su vida a Cristo. La próxima semana vinieron de nuevo y el joven me estaba preguntando sobre el bautismo y cómo orar y diferentes buenas preguntas. Hemos podido discipularlo y responder sus preguntas.

También tengo otro amigo que asistio a la iglesia y trajo a su amiga (que piensa que la felicidad está en un lugar, pero le dijimos que está en Jesús), me encontré con esta persona en una cafetería y le explique que somos salvos por gracia y no por obras pero nuestra fe en Jesús. Este amigo sigue encontrándose con creyentes, Dios lo está llamando.

También una señora que estaba en la junta de inglés es creyente. La invitó un chico que siempre viene al las reuniones de inglés, pero ha estado luchando con su fe y mis compañeros y yo pudimos animarla. Es asombroso y hermoso cómo Dios está obrando.

Ramadán

Hemos estado en Turquía durante el ayuno de Ramadán. Muchos musulmanes ayunan pero otros no. Pero una cosa que nos sorprendió es que hay un baterista dando vueltas a las 4 de la mañana tocando los tambores y despertando a la gente. La razón de esto es para que puedan comer antes de que salga el sol. Pero me di cuenta de que muchas de estas personas ayunan por tradición y no de corazon. Mi equipo a estado orando para que Jesús se revele a ellos. El ayuno nos a ayudado a tener muchas conversaciones.

Vecinos

También nuestros vecinos que saben que somos seguidores de Jesús nos invitaron a la cena de Ramadán después de que bajo el sol. Fue una comida deliciosa e increíble y la pasamos muy bien con ellos. Nos hicieron muchas preguntas sobre Jesús. Además, una vez nos enviaron cena después de que varios de nosotros regresamos de trabajar en Ayvacik. En otra ocasión mi compañera de equipo trajo la biblia y los vecinos la estaban leyendo.

Imán y estudiante

En otra ocasión, mi compañero de equipo Elias y yo conocimos a un imán (maestro del Islam) y su alumno. Entramos en una conversación larga y profunda con ellos. Citamos versículos de la Biblia y versículos del Corán. Hay un verso en el Corán 5:68 que les dice a los musulmanes que no tienen fundamento si no observan el Torá, y los Evangelios y el Corán. Este verso ha sido impactante para muchos musulmanes con los que hemos hablado y la razón es porque no leen. Pero en esta conversación el estudiante fue tan respetuoso que nos invitó a cenar al día siguiente y le regalamos una biblia turca.

Oración

Ha habido momentos en que cuando oro por las personas, Dios se a movido de una manera poderosa. Una vez oré por una señora y me dijo que sentío algo que nunca había sentido y paz. Y le dije que esa es la presencia de Jesús. Ella no puede entender por qué Dios enviaría a Jesús a morir por ella y por qué Él la ama.  Pero el Dios se está moviendo. También orando por otros Dios a tocado sus corazones durante la oración. Tambien nuestro grupo se puso en oracion de Abril 17-18 de 8pm-5am, por los musulmanes en el dia poder para ellos.

Ayvacik

Fuimos a Ayvacik a trabajar en la nueva iglesia un par de veces. Mientras un equipo de mujeres está pintando, nuestro equipo de hombres está haciendo trabajos pesados. Hemos estado trabajando las ocho horas cada vez que vamos. Pero ha sido lindo trabajar laboralmente para gloria y honra de Dios. Lo hemos disfrutado y aunque es pesado. No hay muchas iglesias, así que gloria a Dios estamos ayudando a una que se está construyendo.

ATL (Preguntale al Señor)

Nuestro tiempo terminó en Canakkale, lo cual fue triste porque hicimos muchas conexiones. Pero emocionados porque pudimos ir a Izmir por un par de días para visitar varias iglesias mencionadas en Apocalipsis. Luego, regresomos a Istanbul, donde tendremos un informe y cambiaremos de equipo. Nos dirigiremos a Jordania el 23 con nuevos equipos.

Fuimos a la iglesia de:

En cada ciudad/iglesia, leíamos la carta de Apocalipsis en voz alta. Fue una experiencia poderosa y hermosa. Además, pudimos compartir el evangelio con turistas en esos sitios antiguos o musulmanes que viven en esas ciudades. Que honor nos dio Dios. Y una persona entrego su vida a Cristo.
